With support from the California Arts Council, WRITERS GUILD FOUNDATION will continue its mission to preserve and promote the history and craft of writing for the screen; develop pathways to screenwriting careers for historically marginalized voices; and engage, educate, and inspire emerging writers—especially those from under-served populations—through its programs, events, and library. Grant funds will be used to partially cover our general operating expenses, including rent, staff, and programming costs.
Our programming and resources include:
The Writers Access Support Staff Training Program, a community outreach program that provides emerging writers from historically underrepresented backgrounds (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, over the age of 50, etc.) the skills and experience necessary to become a Writers’ Assistant or Script Coordinator, positions that often serve as the “entry level” to a screenwriting career;
The Veterans Writing Project and Fellowship, community outreach programs aimed at developing the writing skills of U.S. military veterans for professional advancement and personal fulfillment;
The Visiting Writers program, which pairs WGA-enrolled writers with K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and other nonprofit organizations for guest speaking and mentorship opportunities;
Public events that explore the writing processes of prominent film and TV writers and discuss how important social topics are integrated into storytelling for the screen, including popular series “Writers On Writing”, “Showrunner Sessions”, “Inside the Writers Room”, “Research Methods for Writers”, and “WGF Library Script Breakdown”;
WGFestival, a two-day conference in Los Angeles covering the art, business, and craft of writing for film and TV and bringing together writers of all experiences for networking and collaboration opportunities;
The Shavelson-Webb Library and Archive, our collection of over 50,000 film, tv, radio, new media, and video game scripts that is free to visit and open to the public.
