Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Hanford Multicultural Theater Company will continue to be a magnet location for diverse people to gain performing arts experience and participate in creating relevant theater for the community.

Organization Summary

Our organization plays a vital role in our community by inspiring participants to take risks, have fun, and discover how the arts can be both freeing and essential to overall wellbeing. Recognizing that our area lacked accessible artistic opportunities, we founded the Hanford Multicultural Theater Company on February 1, 2017, with the guiding principle: “Theater for all people.” From the beginning, we offered free acting classes and staged performances in unconventional spaces such as parks, malls, parking lots, a museum, a historical church, and courtyards—bringing theater directly to the community.

Three years ago, we established a permanent home in a repurposed building, now known as Lil’ Brick Theater. Designed to reflect the intimacy of small theaters in major arts cities, this space provides a unique and welcoming environment that feels both professional and accessible. We have since expanded our programming to include improv, puppetry, Shakespeare, playwriting, and community events like Monologue Slams, Story Slams, Jam Labs, and open-mic nights.

Our community faces significant economic challenges, with many residents living below the federal poverty line. These barriers often limit access to the arts, making our free classes and pay-what-you-can events essential. By removing financial obstacles, we create an inclusive space that fosters creativity, connection, and personal growth.

We are deeply committed to equity and representation. Our programs serve individuals of all ages, cultures, and abilities, reflecting our region’s rich diversity. We also extend our outreach by teaching theater to youth at the Santa Rosa Rancheria.

With most participants new to the stage, our work builds confidence, skills, and opportunity. Through volunteer-driven efforts, we continue to ensure that the arts remain accessible, transformative, and a natural part of life in our community.
