With support from California Arts Council, the San Diego Women Chorus will help finance the production of three major concerts, two cabaret-style performances, as well as numerous community events in support of other organizations who also celebrate equality and diversity.
The San Diego Women’s Chorus (SDWC) is a lesbian-identified, feminist sisterhood of musicians that welcomes members from the vastly diverse LGBTQIA+ and straight-ally communities. We are a non-profit community chorus that strives to entertain and inspire audiences with music that speaks to issues such as human rights, inclusion, cultural diversity, love, world peace, religious freedom and environmental harmony. Our organization started in 1987 with a handful of lesbian-identified women singing around a piano in our founder’s living room. We have grown considerably over the years, and now have 95 active singers who share and support our mission.
Pre-pandemic, SDWC performed 4 concerts or cabarets a year at different venues in San Diego. At the outset of the pandemic, we pivoted to an online format and have been able to continue providing high quality music through concerts on YouTube and Facebook Live, allowing easy (and free) access to our performances. As of February 6, 2022, SDWC began rehearsing in person once again with all appropriate precautions to reduce the chance of Covid-19 transmission. This is an important year for SDWC as we celebrate our 35th Anniversary. We plan to perform a 35th Anniversary series of 3 concerts (Spring, Summer, and Fall) as well as a holiday cabaret.
In addition to our concerts and cabarets, SDWC supports other local organizations by providing meaningful music and song at their events. Our partners include San Diego Pride, the San Diego LGBTQ Center, and NOW. We also perform at Light Up the Catheral, an interfaith event that kicks off San Diego’s Pride Weekend, as well as the Pride annual event at University of California, San Diego. In 2022, SDWC will also participate in San Diego Sings, a 3 day choral extravaganza sponsored by the San Diego Choral Consortium.
