With support from the California Arts Council, Fusion strives to create programming that is affordable to low income communities. Low income communities are disproportionately affected by systemic racism which drastically affects opportunities to develop infrastructure that supports public arts programming. Fusion takes into account that the East LA community has been affected by a history of racism and oppression when developing programming. Centrally located, culturally relevant and overall providing a healing and empowering space for aspiring young dancers of color. Young people in our programs will learn how dance can be used as a tool for self empowerment and expression. By paying instructors, rent, bills and supplies through these funds, we can maintain the Children’s AFFORDABLE Dance Program and the Dance 2 Make A Difference FREE Dance Program we offer the community.
Currently, Fusion offers classes that focus on Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Flamenco, Hip-Hop, and Latin Social Dance technique and choreography. There are at least two classes offered per day and all classes are of low cost to all participants. Executive/Artistic Director Albertossy Espinoza, founded Fusion because he saw the lack of affordable, language accessible, and centrally located dance spaces for communities of color and low income in East Los Angeles. Fusion began as a dream and a vision and with hard work and community participation has grown into an organization that supports dance education for youth of color from throughout the East Los Angeles area.
Additionally, students have access to performance opportunities around Los Angeles county. Fusion students have performed in various community settings, cultural festivals, theatres, and in our very own space. Two times a year, Fusion hosts shows for students where they have the opportunity to showcase new work. These shows are open to the community and families of students and a celebration of the incredible community of East Los Angeles. The opportunity to perform builds confidence and gives students insight into the professional experience needed to be a dancer. Performance opportunities allow Fusion students to connect with their communities in meaningful ways.
Fusion’s programming takes into account that the East LA community has been affected by a history of racism and oppression. Fusion strives to create programming that is affordable and that provides a healing and empowering space for aspiring young dancers of color. Staff create long lasting and nurturing relationships with students that increase the support and mentorship they have within their lives. When students walk through the doors of Fusion they feel accepted, supported, and seen. Fusion is a home away from home for many.
