With support from the California Arts Council, Opera Modesto will engage, educate, train, inspire and uplift diverse youth in the Central Valley through opera – elements include the Summer Opera Institute, the Story Into Song Literacy Initiative and a Multi-Cultural Concert of up to 15 ancestral languages and styles.
Opera Modesto produces two main-stage operas per season, featuring a combination of local, regional, national and international talent; also producing several high level concerts per season, as well as intimate concerts throughout the region.
The company is investing in new modes of community engagement, impact and collaboration. One such initiative is the annual Story Into Song Literacy Initiative, combining reading of great literature with the imaginative power of live performance and opera, performed in a welcoming alternative venue. Opera Modesto provides free short and long form Curriculum Companion Guides to all schools, after school programs and homeschoolers who attend. The production draws attention and business to downtown area of Modesto, while playing for public and thousands of “Readers” (students of all ages reading the source books). For since 2022, this innovative community initiative has more than doubled each year. In 2025 it reached 10,000+ students TK-12th & University from 5 counties with performances in 9 regional community theaters.
Opera Modesto is very proactive in collaborating with other arts companies in the region, including Ballet Tradiciones Folklorico, Stanislaus County Libraries, Central West Ballet, Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Stanislaus Arts Council.
Opera Modesto’s year-round TOP Young Artists program (educational and training) includes an inclusive, low-tuition, annual conservatory level Summer Opera Institute for teens (13-18 years old), concluding with a free admission public concert. 50% of the diverse youth artists are provided with need based full or partial scholarships. An annual multi-cultural concert encourages performers of all ages to investigate the languages and musical styles of their ancestors, educating themselves, their families and the public about the diverse make up of the central valley region (often includes 13+ languages).
In addition, hundreds of performing arts students are invited to attend mainstage production dress rehearsals and performances for free.
