With support from the California Arts Council, Kaisahan of San Jose will offer free Filipino folk-dance classes to youth. Classes will be held at two community centers in San Jose, CA using a cultural-based dance curriculum, culminating in a final performance activity at the end of the project.
Kaisahan serves approximately 20,000 people annually in the greater San Francisco Bay Area community through 4 core programs: 1) Artists in Schools Program partners with 4 San Jose schools to provide a 20-week classroom instruction of Philippine dances, serving 500 students annually with a culminating recital. 2) Providing Filipino Folk Community Dance classes for all levels, ages, and abilities at the Hamann Park Community Center, serving 500 students annually. 3) Producing 4 mainstage performances by showcasing new work each year in partnership with the Philippine Dance Society with approximately 2000 audience members present annually. 4) Providing Contract Performances to the community by performing and providing lectures on Filipino culture and dance at various festivals, churches, community, educational and business events, and family celebrations; Kaisahan performers an average of 60 contracted shows annually.
