With support from the California Arts Council, Shakespeare Play On will provide over 1,000 students a full Shakespeare performance, in-depth talkbacks with professional actors, backstage tours, and resource guides. Students will also attend classroom workshops exploring Shakespeare and social justice: addressing issues of sexual orientation, gender, race and class privilege.
Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s (SCS) main program is a summer outdoor theatre festival. Each summer, the company produces 5 productions, which include two Shakespeare plays, two non-Shakespeare plays that are classical in nature, or classically inspired and a “Fringe Show.” The Fringe show is a limited performance-run production acted solely by our intern company.
In addition, we have robust Education and Outreach Programs:
• Student Matinee Week
• Internship Program in all areas of Production and Theatre Management
• Weekend with Shakespeare: a free community symposium about the plays in our season
• Educators Day: A focused day-long workshop provides educators tools, strategies, and lesson plans in the instruction of Shakespeare through visceral experiences
• SCS Sessions: a series of discussions with the season’s artists about the artistic process
• Audience Pre-and Post-show Discussions
• Free Youth Tickets
• “Pay What You Will” performances throughout the summer
