Our community spirit is best exemplified through First Night Monterey’s ArtWorks! program, a year-round arts outreach initiative that culminates in the New Year’s Eve celebration. Through ArtWorks!, thousands of young people and families engage with professional artists in hands-on workshops in the visual, performing, and multimedia arts at community sites throughout Monterey County. These workshops foster creativity, encourage active participation, and inspire a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Participants collaborate with teaching artists in the months leading up to First Night, often through partnerships with schools and community organizations where these programs provide valuable enrichment opportunities. The workshops culminate in public exhibitions and performances featured during the First Night celebration and showcased at additional venues across the region, extending their impact beyond a single event.
In 2014, First Night Monterey expanded its commitment to equitable arts access by launching the Greenfield Cultural Arts Center (GCAC), located in the heart of a predominantly migrant farming community. This initiative provides vital access to arts education and creative opportunities for youth and families who may otherwise have limited exposure to the arts.
First Night Monterey’s mission is to build community and inspire connection through accessible, inclusive arts experiences that celebrate creativity, culture, and the human spirit. The organization produces Monterey County’s largest family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration—an alcohol-free event that brings together thousands of residents and visitors through performances, visual arts, and interactive experiences.
Beyond New Year’s Eve, First Night Monterey continues to expand its year-round programming to ensure equitable access to the arts, particularly for youth and families in underserved communities. Through art camps, community-based projects, and partnerships with schools and local organizations, the organization nurtures creativity, promotes cultural understanding, and strengthens a sense of belonging across diverse communities.
