Since 2004, Poppy Jasper International Film Festival (PJIFF) has been the cultural anchor for one of California’s most overlooked regions. South Santa Clara and San Benito Counties: Morgan Hill, San Martin, Gilroy, Hollister, and San Juan Bautista, home to more than 140,000 residents, a majority BIPOC population, and limited arts infrastructure. These communities have been largely bypassed by California’s cultural economy. PJIFF exists to change that.
PJIFF’s annual festival presented 350 films from 40 countries in 2026, drawing 3,000 attendees and 650 filmmakers from 20 countries, 15 states, and across California. Every screening includes a filmmaker Q&A. Nine panels, dedicated student programming days, and a local filmmaker showcase featuring nearly 70 local films ensure the festival functions as genuine community infrastructure. All 400 local filmmakers attend free. Visit California recognized PJIFF as one of the top 5 events out of 90 on the Central Coast, alongside the Monterey Jazz Festival.
PJIFF is building something permanent. By connecting industry professionals with local filmmakers through mentorship and creative partnerships, PJIFF is developing a regional film hub with real workforce pathways. More than 50 local artists are connected to industry mentorships annually, many going on to paid work. Local artist Nacho Moya, connected through PJIFF to Randy Spendlove — former President of Paramount Music, producer of more than 450 studio films, and Grammy Award winner — was hired to create artwork for Spendlove’s current film. PJIFF operates year-round, delivering 20 annual educational programs in filmmaking, screenwriting, animation, claymation, acting, broadcasting, and digital media arts. A new 12-program summer series with CMAP TV launches this year. Through partnerships with libraries, KPJS 101.9 FM — PJIFF’s own community radio station — and downtown small businesses across all five cities, PJIFF strengthens a region California has long overlooked — and refuses to let stay invisible.
