Mixed Bag Productions seeds the success of emerging west coast choreographers and connects dance makers to an international network of artists and organizations spanning New York, Berlin, Vienna and Northern California. MBP serves as an umbrella for Sara’s mentoring work with young dancers. A master healer and a socially engaged artist, Sara is an innovator of the somatic-activist hybridity that informs contemporary dance practices internationally. She is at the cutting edge of dance practices, where poetic experimentation meets embodied alchemy, and soulful improvisation inspires choreographic vision. Her dances are often contextualized or juxtaposed with a writing/speaking technique that shapes space and articulates movement with language. Sara believes that our energetic bodies convey deeper-rooted messages than any culture or identity can express. Like many artists who have spent a lifetime in the heart of their craft, Sara has come to believe that the exploration of these stories forms a vital collective heritage that transcends the artifact of performance. Her art is meant to reveal and transmit the story of our collective humanity—our potential for excellence, our danger—in a time of global change, chaos, and paradigm shift. It is an antidote to fear, doubt, and greed as the face of who we are. Recent home seasons in San Francisco have been presented at CounterPulse, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, ODC Theater, Dance Mission Theater, Joe Goode Annex and Z Space at Project Artaud. In December 2015, Mixed Bag presented Sara’s large-scale retrospective Erasing Time, a 5-hour durational performance featuring over 40 dancers with whom she’d worked over the past 35 years. In 2020, Mixed Bag launched Sara’s 7 Excavations series, workshop and performance experiments informed by the pandemic and based in Sara’s pedagogy developed over 50-plus years.
