With support from the California Arts Council, The Ravi & Shashi Bellare Arts Foundation will be able to sustain the traditional art of Tabla (hand drums) solo performance and other Indian Classical Arts(instrumental, vocal, dance, visual arts) with needed purchases of materials, services, rentals, and artist honorariums for created programming.
Our foundation’s core program is the Festival of Tabla (FOT) which is a two-day event that aims to bring together a forgotten tradition, specifically of the solo tabla performance, along with its age-old repertoire of original compositions which date back to the 16th century, and the oral tradition of ancient rhythmic shlokas (poetry). Additionally, the festival curates a program of poetry, visual art, performance, and analogous practices to tabla performance, so as to situate these practices in conversation with one another for a 21st-century audience. The tabla solo is a rare form of performance that needs a specific platform wherein these written, oral, and performative traditions have space to be exhibited and transmitted down to future generations. Our festival seeks to nurture the preservation of these lost arts with the hope that a younger generation of tabla artists can learn and absorb the historical and cultural legacies that accompany this tradition. Our festival seeks to be a catalyst for furthering the tabla arts, as well as a way for its historical underpinnings to be preserved. It also seeks to provide a platform for female tabla artists, who, within the Indian and global tradition of tabla performance, have not been given the chance to practice their art within a public sphere: neither as accompanying artists, nor as soloists. We recognize the richness of our traditions, but also recognize its failings and we hope to shift the historical paradigm by which female tabla artists have been either ignored, or not given a proper platform to display or perform their art. The foundation also organizes other workshops and concerts throughout the year with the same mission.
