With support from the California Arts Council, Latinas Art Foundation will use the funds to support the Dias de Cultura, a series of events that celebrate the Latino cultural traditions from Southeast Los Angeles. Art Pop-ups that lead to the main festivals, La Vaquereada, Xantolo-Dia de Los Muertos.
Latinas Art Academy Program is created to improve academic performance and increase college readiness. Latinas Art Academy program is a multi-year program which provides out-of-school-time dance classes, art classes, and performance opportunities to low-income neighborhoods. We encourage the involvement of critical thinking, decision-making, stretching the imagination, and opening new perspectives through traditional dances, music and cultural arts by providing traditional folk dance workshops, performing arts concerts, showcasing opportunities, art classes and art exhibits.
La Vaquereada – the three day cultural Festival we have over 50+ vendors, community workshops in dance and art, community cultural performances and live music. Workshops are taught by instructors and professors from different Universities in Mexico to our community which allow members to learn the history and stories expressed through dance. The highlight of the event is the Vaquereada where folk dancers gather to perform a Calabaceado.
Xantolo (Dia de los Muertos celebration) is a festival that links people to their ancestors, the community comes to enjoy performers of all ages dancing along the streets at a plaza wearing elaborate costumes. Musicians play traditional music to accompany the dancers and community members who would like to join the festivities. Artists and community members build alter to celebrate life and death. The alters, temporary statutes, paintings and colorful decorations in the plaza are left on exhibition for 2 weeks.
The SELA Arts Festival is a community showcase that presents some of the best that the community has to offer. The Festival features artists, musicians, vendors, and much more. This special event provides the space for Southeast LA surrounding communities to unite and celebrate the power of art and creativity. With a wide array of activities and exhibitions, the SELA Arts Festival is an event for the whole family while using the LA River as our main platform.
