Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Kaululehua Hawaiian Cultural Center will strengthen our mission to perpetuate Native Hawaiian traditional cultural arts and practices through education. Especially during these difficult times, we teach diverse communities our arts and values, culturally connecting all of us with our natural environment through aloha.

Organization Summary

Our primary focus is on Native Hawaiian cultural traditions, including hula kahiko (ancient dance), hula `auana (modern dance), oli (chant), mele (traditional songs), himeni (modern songs), nā mea hula (arts, crafts, implements), lole hula (hula attire), ‘ōlelo (language) revitalization, and mo’olelo (stories). The Cultural Center and hālau have staged various hula productions that educate audiences through immersive experiences of ancient and modern Native Hawaiian chants, rituals, dances, and songs. In constant collaboration with other traditional Native Hawaiian arts groups and traditional ethnic dance and musical groups, we share what we learn so that our diverse communities benefit from a better understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian culture. Of particular importance is teaching and perpetuating Native Hawaiian performance and hand-craft arts that commemorate and integrate students and audiences with the natural elements and beings that are so important to human life. From ancient songs and chants of our pan-Pacific origins to the songs and stories of places where Hawaiians have made their new homes, especially here in California, we strive to convey and live the morals and values these works bring to life. Despite many challenges from historical, systemic oppression of Native Hawaiian culture, and the financial marginalization of traditional ethnic arts, we continually develop and expand our Cultural Center’s regular classes, public offerings, and collaborations. We aim to bring these life-affirming artistic practices and experiences to people far and wide, sharing practices of mutual respect and love for others and the natural world exemplified in aloha.
