With support from the California Arts Council, FLA will partner with eight artists to provide youth volunteers with art workshops (Murals, Danza Azteca, Theater, Choir, Modern Dance, Ballet Folklorico, Poetry). Youth volunteers will share the knowledge learned to low-income youth and families during FLA’s Youth Leadership Conferences and Family Camp.
FLA’s core programs and services include our annual Youth Leadership Conference, University Seminars, annual Family Leadership Conference, and FLAMA. Through our Youth Leadership Conference, students from across the central coast develop leadership skills in a safe and supportive environment. This 6-day residential experience hosts 100 participants and 30+ volunteer staff members. Youth participants are introduced to public speaking, goal setting, assertiveness, advocacy, self-esteem, and their 4-year college plan. Students are challenged to practice advocating for their educational needs. Youth have the opportunity to express themselves through cultural art forms and empowerment workshops. We want to make sure that all youth challenge themselves to achieve their full potential through safe and positive self-development experiences.
University Seminars are twice a year and cater to the needs of students and families who would otherwise not have access to exploring options in higher education. Through these seminars, students are able to explore university campuses, learn about admissions requirements, financial aid options, student life, and career opportunities. University Seminars include workshops for parents and youth in order to strengthen a family’s understanding of the college-going process.
During our Family Leadership Conference, FLA youth and parents learn about the importance of higher education, being an advocate for their children, and building positive family communication. This three-day experience hosts students, parents, and grandparents with childcare available throughout the entire weekend. This conference is completely in Spanish and seeks to build bridges between the Latino community and the educational system in the United States. Themes include mental health & wellbeing, communication, community engagement, college admissions, funding higher education, self-esteem, and cultural arts.
FLAMA is our year round programming where youth meet biweekly to discuss issues affecting their communities and use the skills they learned at YLC in order to work together and create solutions to the issues.
