With support from the California Arts Council, Soorya Foundation will continue our mission of providing paid platform to Indian classical dancers in the USA – Curating the annual Los Angeles Indian Dance Festival, other annual festivals, paying performers, music recordings and for general operating expenses.
Soorya has four main areas of programming: Original Works, Cultural Organizing, Presenting, Training.
CURATOR: Soorya Foundation curates programs that preserve Indian classical arts while making them accessible, relevant, and community‑centered. Our curatorial work spans festivals, original productions, and collaborative platforms that elevate both emerging and established artists.
The Los Angeles Indian Dance Festival (LAIDF) is our flagship curatorial project (since 2018)—a large‑scale, community‑rooted celebration of Indian classical dance presented annually in partnership with local cultural and civic organizations. The festival brings together Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathak, and other classical forms on one stage, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of India’s artistic traditions. As part of HONORING-OUR-GURU Series, we honor dance gurus for their lifetime achievement and contribution to Indian Dance in USA.
PRODUCTIONS We curate and produce original works inspired by legendary women of ancient India, reimagined with contemporary artistic treatment. These productions blend classical technique with modern staging, narrative innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. (AMMA, a dance production comparing a 21st-century work-from-home mother with the Hindu mother goddess was featured at the South Arts’ FITS conference) Our dedication to these areas ensures that we continue to promote and celebrate the rich tradition of Indian classical arts, while also addressing contemporary issues and fostering community engagement.
COMMUNITY: We curate year‑round programs in schools, libraries, senior centers, and community venues to introduce Indian classical arts to new audiences.
TRAINING: We fulfill our mission by providing accessible, high quality training in Indian classical dance, music, and cultural literacy to all ages and levels, while intentionally welcoming other immigrant communities with parallel experiences
MASTER CLASSES & ARTIST DEVELOPMENT Soorya Foundation curates master classes, workshops, and training opportunities led by distinguished artists. These programs support artistic excellence, deepen cultural knowledge, and nurture the next generation of practitioners.
