Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Dandan Performing Arts Center will further our mission in providing equitable access to music and arts education to the underserved youth of the Alameda County unincorporated communities. The funds will enhance the transformational experiences of each students’ social-emotional learning competencies and growth mindset.

Organization Summary

The center of our mission is youth development through after-school music and arts enrichment programs. The programs are fun and engaging. It is a safe space to develop further social and emotional learning competencies. The program is a platform for our students to reflect and explore ways to find their voice. At the same time, to connect and collaborate with their peers and their teaching artists while becoming creative contributors to our community.

Our students experience transformation through the arts by developing their self-awareness and self-management skills while learning their music or creating artwork. For example, the students can articulate how they may feel by composing a song by learning chords on the guitar. They can jam with other students and form a band with piano, drums, or bass students and further develop the initial composition. They can work together, learning to advocate, communicate, collaborate, and lead while strengthening their musicianship and social-emotional learning competencies. The program includes free participatory in-school and off-site performances, instrumental and choral instructions, intensive ensemble workshops, joint projects between schools, instrument access, and advocacy for community support for school-based music ensembles.

The ensemble program includes the chamber ukulele strum and sing, chamber string chamber, vocal ensemble, jazz, and rock bands, musical theatre, spoken word, instrumental lessons, STEAM, after-school enrichment arts, dance, body percussion, bucket drumming, mentorship, and leadership.

These programs are extensions of one-on-one lessons and performance labs. And while the theories and techniques are taught within these lessons, ensemble playing, theatre, spoken word, and leadership reinforce the lessons learned. More importantly, the students can better understand why they have learned these performance techniques, allowing them to be more engaged and motivated to further their collaboration and creativity.
