With support from the California Arts Council, COMMUNITY YOUTH ORCHESTRA OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA will recruit music teachers to plan for the next orchestra season, especially the challenges of rebuilding the orchestra once we resume in-person instruction. This will include making sure we meet the standards required for safe in-person instruction.
Before COVID, the program had over one hundred and fifty students each year in four major performing groups including the Academy Program for grades Pre/K-4, two intermediate string groups, the Sinfonietta (Elementary) and Sinfonia (Middle School), and our flagship ensemble, the Symphony, which involves a diverse population of students from throughout the Irvine Unified School District as well as over a dozen other school districts in the Orange County area. Committed to accessible music education, our yearly tuition is heavily subsidized through the tireless efforts of parent volunteers and generous donors that have empowered CYOSC to create an instrument loan program for double bass and percussion, support public school teachers working with impacted communities in orchestral music, and develop a leading Community Service Program (CSP) for education outreach. The CSP provides high school volunteers with mentoring by our teaching artists in training the next generation of instrumental musicians in our Academy Program.
