With support from the California Arts Council, GLOBALGIRL MEDIA will train 20 young BIPOC women to interview, film and publish a podcast series with short videos for social media, titled YOUNG, WOKE AND FREE, profiling how girls of color are responding to the extraordinary events of the last twelve months.
GGM intentionally works with marginalized girls to amplify their voice, producing girl-driven content that builds self-esteem, incubates leadership, and promotes gender equity in media and society as a whole. Through carefully-constructed 4-week intensive Summer Media Training Academies and mentor-led additional trainings, internships and career development activities year-round, girls meet, develop story ideas, write and edit blogs, research and report, produce videos and podcasts. Our curriculum is based on the STEAM-driven connected learning models, developed and taught by award-winning media professionals. Our finished videos and blogs report through a gender lens, i.e.: education and careers, poverty and social justice, violence against women, reproductive rights and health, etc. GGM was launched in 2010 and has helped incubate seven chapters worldwide in South Africa, Kosovo, Morocco, Chicago, Kenya, Greece, New York, Oakland and its home base, Los Angeles.
