With support from the California Arts Council, Dance Kaiso will conduct an intergenerational performing arts project in the Bayview, SOMA and Mission/Potrero districts of San Francisco, including weekly classes in Caribbean Dance, Drumming/Percussion and Song and community performances to celebrate MLK Jr. Day, Black History Month and Emancipation/Juneteenth.
Dance Kaiso gave its first performance for an audience of 13,000 on the River Stage of the 1988 World’s Fair in Brisbane, Australia.
We perform and set both Afro-Caribbean and Caribbean jazz fusion choreography on students and professionals for concerts, recitals, Carnival celebrations, Best Village Competitions and within the context of plays.
Our on-site K-12 school residencies have been supported by the California Arts Council, Santa Clara County Office of Education, San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department, Young Audiences of Northern California and Marin Youth in Arts. Residency students learn and perform authentic Caribbean dances, rhythms and songs/chants and are also assisted in creating their own original performance work.
We also teach eight classes a week in California State prisons and one weekly Caribbean drum class for adults in San Francisco.
