Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC) will work with artist Justin Hoover in Peace Movements II, a series of workshops for youth at two sites integrating traditional Kung Fu, contemporary dance, set and costume design, leading to a live performance. Youth will express and document themselves through a creative and physically healthy process, while learning cultural practices and new skills related to Chinese traditional and contemporary art.

Chinatown CDC recognizes the importance of creating high-quality art experiences as part of a comprehensive neighborhood strategy and has a long history of producing community arts events such as Arts in the Alley and the Chinatown Music Festival and co-managing 41 Ross, a community art space. Our partnerships with arts organizations include work with Asian Improv aRts for Stories in Motion performances funded by the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Artists and Communities in Partnership program and with the Chinese Culture Center for the Alleyways project funded by the NEA Our Town program. Recently Chinatown CDC was awarded a Creative Work Fund grant for the And the Community Will Rise project with Lenora Lee. We are also partnering with the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD) for an NEA Our Town Knowledge building grant to support peer exchange workshops, site visits, and published case studies. field.
