“With support from the California Arts Council, LULA WASHINGTON CONTEMPORARY DANCE FOUNDATION will…” support up and coming Next Generation choreographer / teacher / dancer Tamica Washington-Miller to serve young dancers in South Central Los Angeles with deep, year-round training and performance opportunities. Inner city youth ages 16 – 25 will study free of charge with Tamica and the same teachers and dancers who work with LWDT, thus giving them professional exposure.
Lula Washington Dance Theatre runs a year-round dance school for inner city youth ages three and up. The school includes a Youth Dance Ensemble; an apprentice program; and a professional development process to prepare new dancers for our 8-10 member professional contemporary modern dance company, Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT). The company has been cheered across Israel; China; Russia; Brazil; Kosovo; Germany; and Spain, and in more than 300 cities in the US. Lula augments her own passionate and innovative choreographic work choreography by major guest artists including Rennie Harris; Donald Byrd; Kyle Abraham; David Rousseve; Tamica Washington-Miller; Christopher Huggins; Gaspard Louis; and Tommie Waheed Evans. We fully own our own building which has five dance studios, one of which doubles as a 150-seat performance space. We make this space available for rent to local dance groups and to organizations for their gatherings. It has been used by Dance USA and other groups.
