With support from the California Arts Council, LIBRARY ASSOCIATION OF LA JOLLA will provide the Athenaeum Youth Arts Program program to underserved middle and high school students from the neighborhoods of Barrio Logan and Logan Heights. The program will run from October through May and will include tours of local exhibitions and murals, hands-on art making, a portfolio review, and community events to showcase the students’ work.
The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library is the oldest arts organization in San Diego serving as a cultural hub since 1899. It is the only organization in San Diego that commissions, presents, and collects in the areas of visual art and music. The Athenaeum offers hands-on art, as well as lecture-style education programs, on site as well as in schools. We offer an exhibition program that highlights San Diego artists as well as a robust program of Jazz, Chamber, Acoustic, and New Music year round. With a robust collection of books on art and music, we are internationally known for our collection of artists’ books. In 2016, the Athenaeum opened the Athenaeum Art Center (AAC) in Logan Heights to expand the audiences we serve with fully outfitted print and ceramics studios as well as exhibition spaces, and events for students and the community.
