Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, SAN JOSE JAZZ will provide an off-site professional musical performance experience to 500 4th-5th grade students from five Title 1 schools in the Franklin-McKinley School District. These sites have limited access to arts education, a high percentage of ELL students, and of students with free or reduced lunch. Students will be engaged in pre- and post-concert activities to integrate their learning with other disciplines and to their daily lives.

Organization Summary

San Jose Jazz presents great live music! With over 100 performances on 13 stages in 3 days, Summer Fest is one of the Bay Area’s biggest music festivals. The SJZ Boombox Truck is a mobile venue, designed to bring jazz concerts to neighborhoods throughout the Bay Area. The SJZ Break Room is a new state-of-the-art unique setting for live music, shaped by the evolution of audience habits and technology. With a capacity of just 100, almost every seat is within 30 feet of the action.

San Jose Jazz benefits 2,000+ children per year through its year-round, high quality, youth education programs. The programs include Progressions, a research-based creative youth development program. The High School All Stars program is an audition-based big band for talented young players. Summer Jazz Camp connects talented middle and high school students with the Bay Area’s best music teachers for a two-week learning lab. The Next Gen Stage at Summer Fest provides students with opportunities to perform alongside internationally acclaimed artists.

Our community outreach programming includes live performance assemblies to our local public schools, our BoomBox mobile stage for outdoor music concerts, and our newest “Jazz Aid Fund” commissioning project includes financial support for local composers in the San Francisco Bay Area to create new works in various genres of jazz music and lead to our “New Works Fest” that highlights 6-8 of those artists in a musical festival celebrating new jazz music.
