The Arts Council provides over $1 million to 130 State Arts Organizations for “Artists in Schools”

The California Arts Council is pleased to announce approved funding for 130 arts organizations for the agency’s “Artists in Schools” program, a grant program designed to support artists in residency activities that take place in the classroom and in after-school settings.

“The Visual and Performing Arts are core subjects for California schoolchildren, and instruction from professional artists is a key component to a robust arts education under the state’s educational standards,” said Muriel Johnson, Director of the California Arts Council. “The Artists in Schools program brings schools, teachers, and after-school programs together with professional artists to teach dance, music, theater and visual arts to California’s youth.”

There are 123 organizations receiving funding in two categories: “Effective Arts Organization and School Partnerships” for projects taking place in schools during regular school hours, or “K-12 Standards-Based Arts in After-School Programs” for projects taking place on school campuses during non-school hours. Seven organizations received planning grants for the Artists in Schools program, designed to assist the arts organization and school partner to plan a course of action and strategies to incorporate community arts resources into the ongoing standards-based arts activities of a school. The total amount allocated for the 2008-09 Artists in Schools program is $1,139,695.

The list of funded organizations is below, along with each organization’s city and the amount funded.
