Kids In The Spotlight provides transformative media arts education and vocational training for system-impacted youth that includes mentoring, intensive case management services (ICMS), and social-emotional learning. KITS youth develop resiliency, gain control over their lives, experience success, and develop a plan and tools for sustained independent living. KITS’ flagship Script-to-Screen program is an arts education curriculum-based program aligned with LAUSD Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards. In Script-to-Screen, Black and brown foster youth ages 12-22 write, cast, and star in their own short films. The films are showcased for the public at the annual KITS Film Awards, our version of the Academy Awards, giving validation to these young artists. Transitional age youth have access to an increasing array of work opportunities through KITS, from the KITS National Short Screenplay Competition and the Elevate Youth California documentary project to filmmaking gig opportunities made available through PSA contracts and partner organizations. KITS’ diverse array of transformative arts education and paid work opportunities prepares alumni for entry level jobs and media arts internships, opens the door to a network of industry peers and mentors, and builds the self-confidence of our youth to pursue higher education.
