With support from the California Arts Council, Gritty City Rep’s theatre program in Oakland will provide a safe, healthy environment that builds community and fosters the creative abilities of youth of color through intensive, ensemble theatre training. GCRep pays local professional artists of color a living wage, and provides paid youth apprenticeships in acting, technical theatre, and arts admin to cultivate critical thinking and collaboration skills, and build pathways to careers in the arts.
14-24-year-old youth from Oakland build theatre skills and community through rigorous extended training and performance, rehearsing 6 hours weekly from August to May, and performing 2 shows yearly, with a two-week-long run of each show. We help performers return to train and perform in multiple productions, providing paid apprenticeships in acting, technical theatre, and arts administration. We enhance Oakland by bringing new audiences to relevant, powerful, local, affordable theatre.
