With support from the California Arts Council, Elder Care Alliance will continue to conduct arts-based, participatory research addressing the inclusion of older adults, people living with dementia, and their care partners in all aspects of cultural life. The proposed study will focus on the under-represented demographic of isolated older adults. By partnering with friendly visiting programs serving diverse groups, we hope to make a valuable contribution to the body of arts and aging research.
Elder Care Alliance (ECA) has been providing high quality care for older adults. Since 2016, ECA has made a conscious shift to include the arts as an integral component to its strategic plan. This has manifested in three ways within the organization: 1. Within ECA Communities, the majority of Life Enrichment Staff are certified Expressive Arts Therapists, who use music, drama, visual arts, and creative writing to increase quality of life and build community for residents in Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Skilled Nursing. 2. Through Create Art At Work, ECA has embedded creative practice within various aspects of organizational culture. 3. In 2017, ECA created a new position of Experiential Researcher in Residence, hiring a Doctor of Art Therapy to conduct qualitative arts-based research with residents. In 2018, ECA started a new external-facing program with the support of the San Francisco Foundation, bringing arts access to low income people and people living at home with dementia.
