With support from the California Arts Council, PROJECT X FOUNDATION FOR ART AND CRITICISM will expand X-TRA Online and 3 multiplatform series: Artist Rights, Writers Read, and Re:research. X-TRA Online offers intimate and immediate multimedia content, giving voice to a diverse group of artists with a mission to promote critical engagement with contemporary art and ideas from LA. These 3 series take shape in a variety of media and are presented on our website, public events, and in print.
Our core program is X-TRA Contemporary Art Journal, Los Angeles’s longest running critical art periodical. Edited by a collective of artists and writers, X-TRA’s top-quality art criticism is published in print and made available online. We have published 91 issues to date that give voice to artists in Los Angeles, and speak to our city’s growing/recognized position as an international center for contemporary art.
X-TRA’s public programming throughout Los Angeles County includes commissioned performances and readings, artist talks, exhibition tours, screenings, and conversations. Our public programming is free of cost and we collaborate with partners chosen for their accessibility throughout the region.
X-TRA Online expands on the journal’s legacy, with at least 2 intimate and immediate monthly offerings: artists’ writings, videos, podcasts, and writers reading their work. Our online program serves the 200,000+ visitors to our site, who access X-TRA’s complete online archive and growing array of web-only content, to gain access to a range of responsive writing, accessible criticism, podcast episodes, and debates on pressing topics, like artists’ rights.
