Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, KALW will teach students from San Francisco’s public high schools the art of audio journalism and storytelling, and guide them in the creation of a podcast series focused on the impact of media on the lives and outlooks of young people. KALW’s Summer Podcasting Institute will empower youth to create podcasts and radio reports heard by a broad audience, and grow student capacity to do high-quality work in a rapidly-expanding area of media.

Organization Summary

KALW airs content from NPR, BBC, NHK Japan and other national and international news sources, and produces local news, a daily public affairs and culture call-in show, and a daily newsmagazine. It also broadcasts a wide array of music, arts, discussion and non-arts related shows.

KALW produces 12 weekly shows which highlight local musicians and artists, and we collaborate with local music organizations to produce broadcasts of live concerts.

KALW regularly produces or contributes to live arts, music and public affairs events. We regularly present live storytelling events, including the series “Sights & Sounds of the Bay Area,” at venues in and involving artists from underserved communities. We also promote and present live music offerings through our “KALW Presents” banner.

KALW trains community journalists through several programs, most notably the Audio Academy, a training course in which all aspects of radio production are taught: Story development; script writing and editing; interviewing and audio engineering. We also mentor incarcerated people in San Quentin and Solano State Prisons to create the podcast “Uncuffed”, and students of the San Francisco Bay Area to create the podcast “tbh”.
