Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the El Cerrito’s Art & Culture Commission will partner with Dani Gabriel, Poet Laureate, to engage El Cerrito in a multidisciplinary project exploring changing ideas of family in our evolving community. This project promotes connection across difference & the many ways people come together to form supportive and nurturing families. It will also look at the realities of the changing Bay Area and the ways economic & cultural shifts impact families.

Organization Summary

In October 2015, the ACC established a Poet Laureate Program funded by the City’s Art in Public Places Program. The Poet Laureate creates and leads activities that will raise the status of poetry and literature in the everyday consciousness of El Cerrito residents and inspires writing and performances of poetry among all age groups. The Poet Laureate serves for 2 years.
The El Cerrito Creative ReUse (ECCRU) Artist Residency was approved by the El Cerrito Arts and Culture Commission in 2015. Two artists have served since 2017. The program is intended to support local artists (in Contra Costa & Alameda Counties) who work with recycled materials, and to encourage environmental stewardship – specifically, resource conservation, recycling and upcycling – in the community through art that inspires people to think about sustainability and consumption.
The Commission also provides mini-grant funding for arts programming and juries the City Hall Gallery Space.
