Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the Justice for My Sister Collective (JFMS) will increase outreach efforts from our staff to foster relationships with local service providers and build institutional partnerships. We will host both:

1. a partner networking mixer and
2. subsequent one-on-one meetings to strategize collaborations and action plans.

These activities will be carried out with the leadership of JFMS’s ED and Operations Manager, and the support of our student liaison.

Organization Summary

Our main programs are:

-Video Diaries: Instruction, technical support, and one-on-one mentorship for participants to tell their personal story in a 5-minute video diary, to be disseminated on our social media platforms with over 25,000 followers.
-Black, Indigenous, People of Color Sci-Fi Screenwriting Lab: a competitive incubator initiative where fellows author the pilot episode of their futurist sci-fi TV show. A select group of participants will go on to direct and produce their concept videos to further expand their artistic and professional portfolio.
-Nuevas Novelas: An anti-colonial job-training storytelling and community engagement intensive for teens of color, ages 13-18, covering media literacy, filmmaking and/or podcasting. Topic focuses include environmental justice, healthy dating/signs of abuse, and transnational solidarity movements to end gender-based violence.
-Job Placement: Partnerships with other organizations and individuals to create job opportunities for our students.
-Take Back the Night/Retomemos la Noche: A bilingual outdoor music and arts festival to break the silence around domestic violence and sexual assault. Through a resource fair, family-friendly community-led arts installation, giveaways, and film screenings, we engage immigrant women and their families to connect them with local services and the opportunity to break the silence against all forms of gender-based violence.
