give the gift of music through an after school band program for students at elementary schools whose curriculum does not offer an opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Music connects children with their culture through a common language, crossing generational, social, and racial barriers. Participation in performing arts builds discipline, character, pride, and self-confidence at a crucial age, provideing a springboard for greater achievements in their teenage years and adulthood.
Founded in 1963, Mandarins of Sacramento, Inc., provides an opportunity for students, educators, and fans to hone their performance, leadership, and teaching skills under the instruction of some of the finest educators in performing arts. Ranging from an after school band program to intense multi-day skills camps and instrument-specific clinics and master classes, participants are able to study in a focused and enriching environment that includes performing alongside the members of today’s top drum corps. In the past 57 years, thousands of young men and women from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds have been part of the Mandarins family. Mandarins programs have won numerous awards, including California State Championships and Drum Corps International Division III World Champions. Mandarins programs have been two-time recipients of the prestigious Spirit of Disney Award, signifying outstanding achievement, excellence in educational and entertainment programs for youth.
