With support from the California Arts Council, Dance Kaiso will conduct an African-Caribbean Performing Arts residency at Meadows-Livingstone School in San Francisco, including classes in Caribbean Dance and Caribbean Drum/Percussion+Songs taught by Dance Kaiso Directors Wilfred Mark and Robbin Frey, plus an Introduction to the Steel Drum, taught by Guest Artist Val Serrant. Student performances will be held at SF Day of the Dead, The Village Project Kwanzaa celebration and school graduation.
Dance Kaiso gave its first performance for an audience of 13,000 on the River Stage of the 1988 World’s Fair in Brisbane, Australia.
We perform and set both Afro-Caribbean and Caribbean jazz fusion choreography on students and professionals for concerts, recitals, Carnival celebrations, Best Village Competitions and within the context of plays.
Our on-site K-12 school residencies have been supported by the California Arts Council, Santa Clara County Office of Education, San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department, Young Audiences of Northern California and Marin Youth in Arts. Residency students learn and perform authentic Caribbean dances, rhythms and songs/chants and are also assisted in creating their own original performance work.
We also teach eight classes a week in California State prisons and one weekly Caribbean drum class for adults in San Francisco.
