Venice Arts is seeking a creative arts educator to teach in-person workshops for youth ages 10-18 at a satellite program located in Watts, South Los Angeles. The ideal candidate will lead interactive theme-based projects in filmmaking and/or animation that ignite the creativity and storytelling skills of their students!
Ideal candidates should also have a passion for working with under-resourced and underserved youth. They should also have knowledge or interest in developing their ability to engage with students from a trauma-informed and culturally competent lens. Finally, candidates will have a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives, and experiences, and an ability to create a welcoming environment for all students.
Venice Arts provides templates, examples and 1:1 support to help each teacher craft a fun and exciting workshop. Venice Arts requires all teaching artists to attend paid training and allow for classroom observations, and feedback. We look for educators who are eager to continue learning and excited to collaborate with their peers.
Qualifications
Prior experience working with youth ages 10-18 is required; with at least one year of teaching experience preferred. Familiarity with project-based learning and interactive teaching is a strong plus. We strongly prefer applicants who view teaching as an extension of their artistic practice and are interested in building a sustained working relationship with Venice Arts.
Schedule
This position is for a satellite workshop in Watts. The workshop begins on August 26 and ends October 30th. Classes will meet weekly on Tuesdays and Thursday 4:30-6pm. A mandatory faculty training will be held in-person on August 19th. Consideration for rehire is based on performance and availability. Additional hours include training, syllabus development and 1:1 meetings with the Director of Education.
Compensation
This is a non-exempt (hourly) position. Entry level teaching artists begin with a teaching rate of $30 per hour. Class prep, syllabus writing (up to 8 hours), and mandatory training are paid at an administrative rate of $25/hour. Each class is compensated for 3 hours of teaching and 1 hour of preparation, resulting in an average of $2,500 for the entire workshop series.
