Call for artists: Arts Teach at Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Description

Call Summary: Segerstrom Center for the Arts is currently accepting applications from experienced artists to join our Arts Teach roster as freelance independent contractors. Arts Teach is one of the nation’s preeminent and most robust rosters of Teaching Artists, providing the highest-quality arts assemblies, workshops, and residencies that help increase access to the arts as part of a well-rounded and equitable education.

Program description: By presenting fee-for-service, subsidized, and grant programs to schools and community organizations throughout Southern California, Segerstrom Center’s ambition is to serve every corner of our community. As we strive to excel in all avenues of arts education, our partnerships with local teaching artists make such excellence possible.

Location: Arts Teach works primarily in Orange County schools, and occasionally in schools from parts of Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.

Our typical school partner:

  • May identify as Title I
  • Aims to expose students to a new art form
  • Seeks additional arts education programming to supplement its students’ education with cross-curricular connections via the arts
  • Books artists during school hours, and occasionally in afterschool programs

Project description: Arts Teach is currently looking to contract teaching artists who present a residency program in one of the following areas:

  • Music (any)
  • Music (instrument making)
  • Contemporary dance

Proposed residency lesson plans should engage, enrich, focus on the process of learning as opposed to just an art “product,” and use the art form as a medium to teach concepts beyond it. Cross-curricular connections should be made through use of the art form, with the art form at the focus.

Each lesson should incorporate 1-2 performance standards from the CA Arts Standards. Each subsequent lesson should build on concepts from the preceding lessons.

Artists on our roster are empowered to present a program with the content of their choice*, demonstrating their expertise in their unique art form! *All programs must be auditioned and approved by Arts Teach and must be presented as-is during bookings.

Required qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge, expertise, and passion for an art form or discipline of the arts
  • Experience teaching your art form in group settings to elementary-aged students
