Description

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) invites applications for the position of Instructional Assistant, Art. An Instructional Assistant, Art assembles materials and equipment used in demonstrations and classroom assignments; maintains, catalogs, and assembles inventories of art objects; operates and services equipment; assists students and faculty with instructional activities; and orders, issues, receives, and stores classroom materials and supplies.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Monthly Salary: $4,917.38 – $6,091.78/month ($59,008.56 – $73,101.36 annually)*

*Salary Information is based on a full-time, 12-month position.

Health Benefits: District-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for employee and dependents. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided free of charge for each employee. A Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) with $1,500 contributed by LACCD annually.

 

Paid Time Off: 12 full-pay days and 88 half-pay days of illness leave per year, at least 16 paid holidays per year, and accrued vacation time from 10-24 days per year depending on the position.  Other paid time off options are also available.

 

Retirement: Employees become members of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) pension. Employees are also covered by Social Security.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Schedules and oversees the use of one or more instructional art department laboratories by students, faculty, and staff.

Instructs students individually in the proper and safe use and operation of a variety of equipment and tools.

Explains to students established instructional laboratory and equipment policies.

Assists instructors in the set up of classes and preparation of instructional materials and aids and may participate in classroom demonstrations.

Assists instructional staff by participating in the selection, adaptation, and development of study aids.

Assists instructional staff by providing observations of the problems encountered and progress made by students using a laboratory as part of the educational program.

Effectively utilizes the capabilities and functions of standard computer software applications in the performance of duties.

Catalogs, assembles, and maintains art collections and monitors their use by instructors and students.

Operates, adjusts, and makes minor repairs on equipment used in the art laboratory by students and faculty.

Keeps stockrooms and work areas orderly and clean.

Issues supplies, materials and equipment for student use in laboratory and classroom assignments; keeps records and effects the return of supplies and equipment checked out to students.

Orders, receives, inspects, and stores supplies and equipment for the art department including ceramic, painting, drawing, gallery, printmaking, and design stockrooms.

Maintains inventory records for supplies and equipment and prepares periodic inventory reports and requisitions.

Gathers information and prepares programs and promotional materials for the department’s art gallery events.

Answers inquiries from students, staff, and community members regarding art gallery events and art department business.

Maintains laboratory attendance and progress records for instructional staff.

May assist with work related to department business such as document creation and editing, time keeping, answering telephone inquiries, and posting updated information on Web pages, as needed.

May provide training and work direction to student employees.

Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education and Experience:

A. An associate degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university with a major in art, art history, drawing, painting, sculpture, or a related field.

OR

B. Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND two years of full-time, paid experience in an art department of an educational institution which required familiarity with art supplies and related equipment and assisting students in the use of art laboratories. Courses in design, drawing, painting, and related areas are desirable.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process may consist of one or more exam parts which may include a training and experience evaluation, written test, performance test and/or oral interview.

 

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive examination process. Candidates who pass all exam parts are placed on an eligibility (hiring) list based on their overall exam score. In accordance with legal requirements, hiring departments may make job offers to candidates in the top three ranks of the eligibility list.
