As the national repository of Japanese American history, the Japanese American National Museum (“JANM”) creates groundbreaking historical and arts exhibitions, educational public programs, award-winning documentaries, and innovative curriculum that illuminate the stories and the rich cultural heritage of people of Japanese ancestry in the United States. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, JANM is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. JANM also speaks out when diversity, individual dignity, and social justice are undermined, vigilantly sharing the hard-fought lessons accrued from this history. JANM’s voice has never been more urgent or relevant than during this time of rising Anti-Asian hate and racism, and it has committed to galvanizing and advocating for the AAPI community.

The Outreach Education Coordinator is responsible for the development, piloting, evaluation, and launch of a dynamic new in-school outreach program in grades 1-12. An experienced educator with a working knowledge of object-based learning in addition to familiarity with working with school districts, school administrators, classroom teachers, and a diverse audience of students. This position requires reliable transportation as this position travels to various locations around Los Angeles. This position is responsible for building JANM’s capacity to fulfill institutional strategic priorities and to develop an outreach program with objectives informed by the Education Unit Teaching Philosophy, and the On-Site School Visit Learning Objectives

Bachelor’s degree in Education, History, or Asian American Studies preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 3-5 years of experience in a formal or informal environment. Works closely with Education Administrative Assistant to ensure clear communication with educators and schools. Experienced with tracking and analyzing data, budgets and collaboration on grant proposals. Ability to multi-task and prioritize.  Knowledge of school district policies and procedures. Knowledge of object-based teaching and different learning styles. Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.  Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented. Professional email and phone manner is essential.  Ability to work in a team-environment, be a self-starter. Knowledge of Japanese American history, culture and community is a plus; however, sensitivity to issues of diversity and ethnicity is essential. Valid driver license and proof of insurance is required. Background and credit check required and employees must be up to date on vaccination + bivalent boosted for COVID-19.
