On-Call Porter
The Operations department of the Skirball Cultural Center seeks a capable, self-motivated, attentive, detail-oriented individual for the position of Porter. This person will be responsible for maintaining public, office and surrounding facilities in clean and orderly condition to meet health and safety standards. They will also be required to set up and take down furniture and equipment for special events and meetings in accordance with specific design plans. This is a variable-hour, on-call position with a pay rate of $19/hour. The schedule for this position is based on scheduled programs and private events. This position reports to the Senior Facilities Supervisor.
Responsibilities:
Maintenance
· Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and vacuums Museum exhibit spaces, hallways, stairs, restrooms, and office spaces; clean furniture and fixtures; washes walls, windows, doors, and equipment.
· Empties trash and garbage containers.
· Cleans/sweeps parking lots and walkways to ensure they are free of debris.
· Operates minor cleaning equipment and uses cleaning and other bio and environmentally safe cleaning agents, in accordance with safety instructions.
· Notifies supervisor concerning hazardous conditions or repairs needed in facilities or equipment.
· Cleans debris from sidewalks, parking lots, and surrounding areas.
Events/Meetings
· Set up tables, chairs, stands, boxes, equipment, etc. in accordance with pre-determined plans.
· Break down event and meeting set-ups and stores furniture and other equipment; ensures furniture and equipment is clean and ready for future use.
· Cleans event areas (e.g., mops, sweeps, vacuums) as needed, to ensure area is clean and ready for the next event or meeting.
· Ensure all trash is disposed of properly.
General
· Assist with loading and unloading of equipment and furniture as needed; transport, store, and/or deliver items throughout campus as requested.
· Respond positively to request for assistance from staff and others.
· Perform related duties as required to meet Skirball mission and goals.
Qualifications:
· Demonstrated skill in institutional housekeeping
· Knowledge of floor care equipment, waxes, and cleaners
· Ability to read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, cleaning chemical instructions, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
· Ability to spend substantial time walking, standing, and performing the physical labor associated with cleaning facilities. This includes reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, speaking, and listening.
· Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and assist others with heavier items
· Ability to exert self physically to perform all duties of the job
· Must be able to perform this job safely, with reasonable accommodation, if necessary, without endangering the health or safety of him/herself or others
· Effective oral communication skills; fluency in Spanish, English, or both preferred
· Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
· Courteous and friendly people skills
· Ability to work various shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays
· Ability and willingness to perform all duties in accordance with the Skirball’s mission and vision
· Note: The environment is mostly clean and comfortable but may include some minor annoyances such as noise, odors, drafts, and will include outside temperatures.
