Overview

Under the guidance of the Senior Communications Manager, Milly J. Correa and the Armory External Relations team, you will assist with day-to-day media production and communications tasks at Armory Center for the Arts — a community arts center in Pasadena. You will gain valuable, real-world experience contributing as an equal member of the Armory Communications team. Intern candidates are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts.

The mission of the Armory Center for the Arts is to nurture our community and its young people by creating, learning, and presenting art to advance equity and social justice. Nonprofit and donor-supported, the Armory is a leader for contemporary art exhibitions and community arts education, delivering vibrant art education programs to children, teens, adults, and families throughout the region. The Getty Marrow Communications Internship will offer the selected undergraduate student the opportunity to:

  • Receive training and mentorship from the Armory’s Communications team
  • Gain hands-on experience with media and design production
  • Develop an understanding of and experience in the daily workings of a mid-sized community-based arts organization
  • Receive positive job references upon successful completion of your internship
  • Acquire class credit (if applicable)

Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be of a group underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent;
  • Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate (bachelor’s degree program or associate degree program). Students must have completed at least one semester or two-quarters of college by June 2023. Students who graduated after April 1, 2023, are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.)
  • Reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident (non-citizen authorized to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis; also known as a “green card” holder). Students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) status valid through the internship period are also eligible.

Candidates are not eligible if:

  • You have previously been an Armory Getty Marrow Undergraduate intern
  • You have received a prior BA, BS, or higher degree
  • Are family members of Armory staff or board members

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a full-time undergraduate student majoring in communications, marketing, photography, film/video, media design, graphic design, visual arts, or other related fields. Candidates should have some or all of the following attributes:

  • Be proficient in Mac OS
  • Be proficient in G-Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, Calendar, Slides, etc.)
  • Be proficient in Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, PremierePro, etc.)
  • Be social media savvy (Instagram and Facebook)
  • Have strong video skills (pre-production, production, post-production)
  • Have photography and photo editing skills
  • Manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
  • Have excellent verbal, written, and listening skills
  • Follow instructions and ask thoughtful questions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team both in-person and virtually
    Have a positive attitude and a strong desire to learn

Basic HTML coding skills and a penchant for social media marketing and storytelling are a plus. Previous internships or other relevant experiences in the visual arts are a plus, but not required.

Supervision and Training

Intern will report directly to the Senior Communications Manager and will assist with:

  • Documenting/editing/formatting short videos and photos to promote our education and exhibition programs on social media & website 
  • Creating content and captions for Armory social media posts
  • Basic updates to our website using the SilverStripe Content Management System (CMS)
  • The development and execution of an online public program led in part by the Intern,  with guidance from Armory staff and using Armory resources
  • Documenting on-site and off-site programs and events (video and photo)
  • Creating print marketing materials (postcards, flyers, etc.)

Duration and Compensation
Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns must work full-time (no more than 40 hours a week), for 10 consecutive weeks beginning no sooner than June 5 and ending no later than August 25, 2023. This internship is intended to be a hybrid of remote and in-person work, with most projects being executed remotely. The exact schedule will be discussed and decided upon prior to hiring. Pay rate is $17/hr.
