Who is MTC?
Marin Theatre Company is the Bay Area’s premier mid-sized theater and the leading professional theater in the North Bay. MTC was founded as the Mill Valley Center for the Performing Arts in 1966. In 1977, the organization focused exclusively producing and presenting plays and in 1984 changed its name to Marin Theatre Company. Since then, MTC has continued to produce world-class theater for Marin County and Bay Area Communities, including world premieres and west coast premieres at its 231 seat Boyer Theatre. MTC strives to set a national standard for intimate theater experiences, featuring provocative plays by passionate playwrights. We create quality educational programs that inspire, educate, and encourage empathy through educational and outreach activities, including student matinee performances, summer camps, in-school residencies, and after-school programs
MTC is a LORT-D company, which operates with a $2.6M annual budget and produces a four-play mainstage season in addition to a new play festival, periodic staged readings, and development workshops.
Director of Production
Marin Theatre Company (MTC) seeks a thoughtful, collaborative, and enthusiastic arts professional to serve as its Director of Production. Reporting to the Artistic Director, the Director of Production will lead MTC’s production department for all MTC regular season productions and expanded programming, including new play programs and educational programs with production components.
General Responsibilities and Duties
Work with MTC’s Managing and Artistic Directors and the senior team to set and achieve goals for the organization following strategic priorities.
Negotiate agreements with artists, designers, directors, and collective bargaining units in collaboration with the General and Managing Directors.
Cultivate, develop, mentor, and retain skilled production personnel.
Ensure all productions are produced in a timely and fiscally responsible manner with the highest artistic quality possible.
Specific Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
Finances: Develop and supervise production budgets, as well as show related artistic budgets. The Director of Production will keep the Artistic and Managing Directors apprised of the status of the production budget on a regular basis. Process, track and reconcile all production department accounts payable and overhire/seasonal employee payroll. Work with Artistic and Development departments to create budget drafts for grant applications.
Schedule: In collaboration with senior staff, develop the season schedule for all mainstage and expanded programming. Develop and administer production calendars and design deadlines for each production. Along withTechnical Director, determine load-in and tech schedules for the stage.
Design Process and Analysis: Guide all director/design teams through the design process to guarantee the reasonable and timely completion of all designs. With the input of appropriate technical staff, analyze all designs submitted to determine feasibility of execution within the allotted time, money and personnel available.
Managing Production Personnel: Hire, contract and supervise, in consultation with the Artistic Director, artistic staff and/or Managing Director when appropriate, all production staff and contractors including, but not limited to: designers, full-time and part-time technical staff, company manager, electricians, carpenters, stage managers, production assistants, wardrobe personnel, running crew, artistic consultants and any additional personnel required for specific production needs.
Production Liaison: Facilitate clear communications throughout the production process, and act as a liaison between directors, designers, stage managers and MTC artistic, production and administrative staff. Included but not limited to: coordinate and conduct all design and production meetings; attend first read through, designer run, technical rehearsals and previews as necessary; and maintain department contact information and show rosters. Along with artistic staff, serve as liaison to labor unions for actors, stage managers and designers and ensure company compliance with all union rules.
Department Support: As necessary, support productions with hands-on projects including (but not limited to) special effects, sound, video and projections, purchasing, sourcing and researching materials and techniques. Maintain a safe work environment at all times. Address safety hazards with appropriate personnel promptly.
Artistic Planning: Attend artistic planning meetings, workshops and readings when required; read and analyze scripts. Develop working relationships with designers, production managers, technicians, and actively scout new talent in an effort to bring projects, scripts, playwrights, designers, directors, or other artists to the artistic team’s attention.
Human Resources: Responsible for HR documentation for all production personnel, including but not limited to: prepare contracts, collect tax forms, process and sign timesheets and handle the initial paperwork for Workers’ Compensation for all production department-related claims.
Inventory and Purchasing: Oversee inventory and maintenance of all equipment, including but not limited to shop, lighting, costume, sound, and projection equipment.
Safety Officer: Serve as the MTC Safety Officer responsible for overseeing the maintenance of a safe workplace in compliance with CDC, local and state governments, OSHA, ADA and Building Fire Codes. Safety Officer is responsible for developing a safety manual and addressing any safety hazards or safety infractions and following up on any hazard reports. Safety Officer supervises COVID Safety Manager and the development of COVID safety policies and procedures. The Safety Officer, in addition to the General Manager and Managing Director, is also responsible for ensuring that all employees are familiar with the safety manual and Emergency Procedures policy.
Company Management: Work in tandem with other staff members to find housing, book flights, arrange transportation to/from the theater and facilitate other company management concerns.
Rental Liaison: Oversee occasional facility and equipment rentals. Including but not limited to updating fee schedule and policies, fielding all requests, meeting with prospects, negotiating contracts and acting as or hiring and supervising the technical liaison when the MTC facility is rented to outside organizations.
Experience and Skills
MTC is seeking a strategic and innovative thinker with exceptional leadership skills and a demonstrated history of relevant experience. The ideal candidate will possess:
A strong commitment to Anti-Racist theatre practices, as well as Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility principles.
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Director of Production, Production Manager or as a member of a production management team.
A broad understanding in all aspects of technical theater.
A deep well of experience in production, including co-productions, presentations, and collaborations
Experience creating, monitoring and adhering to budgets.
Experience overseeing production calendars and schedules.
Experience reading ground plans, light plots and other theatrical specifications.
Ability to read a script and assess requirements with respect to staffing, budgeting and design
A history of managing a high-producing team with the ability to lead as a “servant leader,” deriving deep satisfaction from achieving the best work of others.
Familiarity with LORT, as well as AEA, SDC and USA contracts and procedures.
High-level communication skills, as well as experience negotiating and acting as mediator in artistic and technical discussions.
Effective problem-solving skills.
Excellent computer skills with knowledge of spreadsheets and common industry-specific software such as CAD programs, Lightwright, QLab and Isadora.
Exemplary skill in managing multiple complex projects, both short-term and long-term, simultaneously.
Ability to take initiative, multi-task, and work graciously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
The commitment to perform all work in a manner that is consistent with MTC’s core values.
The ability to provide leadership and logistical support for special projects as needed.
Other Requirements:
Must be able to navigate stairs regularly (the administration offices and the control booth are accessible by stairs only)
Ability to lift 40lbs, climb ladders, and perform manual labor on an occasional, as-needed basis, or to work with MTC to develop reasonable accommodations.
Valid driver’s license and ability to drive mid-sized vehicles strongly preferred.
Compensation:
Salary range is $80,000+, commensurate with experience. This position is full-time, salaried, non-exempt. Will require some work on nights and weekends, particularly during technical rehearsals and previews. Benefits package includes health, dental, vision, and 403b retirement. Generous paid vacation benefits included.
