The Skirball Cultural Center seeks an enthusiastic team player to serve as Assistant/Associate Registrar, Permanent Collections. Reporting directly to the Registrar, this position is responsible for assisting with all aspects of collections care as they relate to the Museum’s permanent collection. This will include, but not be limited to, object rotations in permanent galleries, managing collection acquisitions, assisting with regular object conservation, and all related filing, record management, and database management.

 

This position will also assist with the installation and the de-installation of all temporary and traveling exhibitions on-site at the Skirball, taking direction from the Registrar and Associate Registrar as needed. This position works closely with other members of the Museum department, including curators, preparators, administrative team members, and exhibition coordinators. They will also work cross-departmentally with operations, education, and public programs.

 

While a portion of this job may be performed remotely, this position will require regular on-site work as needed to support the operations of the Museum department. Qualified candidates must have an adequate home office.

 

Starting salary range: $24–29 per hour

 

Responsibilities

Conduct object rotations for the Museum’s permanent exhibitions, including updating rotation records, providing pertinent Skirball employees with object change information and photo documentation, and coordinating with contract conservators and other vendors as needed.
·         Manage acquisitions by fielding donation requests, scheduling Acquisitions Committee meetings, and processing all accepted donations by preparing incoming or outgoing receipts, Director’s acknowledgement letters, Deeds of Gift, and other donor correspondence; assign object numbers, physically number objects, and create storage locations for objects.

·         Assist with the implementation and maintenance of collection records and documentation of accessions and de-accessions, condition reports, conservation treatments, exhibition history, loans, and object location changes and rotations, both in paper format and the Museum collection management database.

·         Object handling with regard to installing, deinstalling, packing, shipping, and storage.

·         Update and manage conservation files; schedule conservation treatments according to approved conservation priorities and plans; assist conservators in stabilizing all temporary exhibition objects.

Assist with maintenance of a disaster recovery plan to help ensure the stability of the permanent collection and loans in case of flood, fire, pests, or earthquakes.
Assist with developing, maintaining, and enforcing registration policies and procedures.
Conduct provenance research on collections objects.
·         Monitor collection environments to ensure their physical safety and security; conduct monthly Integrated Pest Management inspections in collections storage and gallery spaces.

Maintain clean storage space and order supplies as needed for daily museum operations and special projects.
·         Maintain storage plan and inventory control procedures; conduct periodic inventories.

 

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes
 

·         Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in museum studies, art history, or related field, and at least 3 to 5 years of museum registration experience

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop collaborative relationships across the institution

·         Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task

·         Excellent computer skills, demonstrated ability to use Office 365 applications, and experience working in museum collection databases

·         A keen appreciation and understanding of the Skirball Cultural Center’s mission
