Job Title: Analog Fabrication Specialist
Department: Fabrication Shop
Reports to: Fabrication Shop Manager
FLSA Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours: Sat: 10:00AM-7:00PM and Sun: 10:00AM-7:00PM / Additional weekday/weeknight shifts as required, up to (30) hours per week

Summary:
Within a fast-paced Academic environment, the Analog Fabrication Specialist will work closely with and report to the Fabrication Shop Manager and Analog Fabrication Coordinator assisting students and faculty attain success in realizing the physical manifestation of their designs and ideas.

The Fabrication Specialist candidates will have extensive experience using and maintaining conventional Wood and Metal-working equipment. Candidates will be responsible for advising and training Shop users in the safest and most efficient use of fabrication equipment. Candidates will have practical experience with welding practices; plaster/resin casting; mold-making; thermal-forming; basic concrete work, and the ability to instruct students, faculty, and staff in the successful application of these processes in their coursework and research. The Fabrication Specialist will be capable of assisting with medium-scale construction methodology; gallery installation techniques; furniture design/building. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable and productive working as part of a team, leading a team, or completing projects independently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Training of all Shop users and staff in the safe and proper use of Fabrication Shop equipment, to include: woodworking/metalworking tools and equipment; Thermal-Forming equipment; welding equipment; plasma cutter
• Troubleshooting/Repair/Maintenance of equipment and infrastructure
• Assist in evaluation and implementation of equipment
• Assist in creation and updating of safety documentation
• Assist in creation and updating of Shop usage policies
• Act as Lead-Person for team of 2-6 workers
• Supervision/Training of student workers
• Advise and assist Shop users in the planning/scheduling/completion of their projects
• Assist/advise students, faculty, staff regarding material selection/handling/disposal
• Advise and assist students, faculty, staff, and exhibitors with gallery installations
• Work with staff, students, and faculty to complete construction of furniture, fixtures, jigs for Shop and campus use
• Assist with and/or Complete student and faculty projects for “Curbside” delivery
• Use/Application of third-party Safety Credentialing Database (SafetySpot)
• Use/Application of in-house Electronic/Online tools (SCI-Arc Shop App)
• Use/Application of MS Teams platform
• Use/Application/Management of self-serve tool dispensers
• Develop/Present student tutorials, online and in-person
• Enforcement of Shop policies and protocols
• Maintain a clean Shop environment
• Tool circulation and tracking
• Other tasks, as assigned

Qualifications:

• Minimum (4) years general woodworking experience, using standard saws/jointers/planers/shapers/sanders/drill press/etc.
• Minimum (4) years general metalworking experience, using standard saws/grinders/brakes/benders/MIG/TIG welders/plasma cutters/etc.
• Minimum (2) years plaster/resin casting and mold-making experience
• Minimum (1) year thermal-forming experience
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite/MS Teams/Outlook
• Some experience with Digital fabrication equipment (3D Printers/Laser Cutters/Router Mills) preferred
• Competent in the use of Microsoft Office/Outlook Suite (experience with Rhino/Adobe Illustrator a plus)

Other Requirements:

• Must be comfortable wearing appropriate respiratory equipment for work in a dusty environment, along with any other required PPE (face shields/goggles/protective clothing/etc.)
• Must possess ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination
• Frequently: stand, walk, bend, reach above shoulder level, use of keyboard/mouse, light lifting (less than 20 lbs.), hand dexterity, hand twisting, simple grasping, light pushing / pulling (less than 20 lbs. of force), moderate lifting (20-50 lbs.), moderate pushing / pulling (20-50 lbs. of force), move around machinery, exposure to outdoor work environments
• Occasionally: sit, crouch/squat, climb, power grasping, heaving pushing/pulling (50lbs of force), exposure to dust, fumes, gases
• Experience in an Academic setting preferred
