Store Associate, Holiday Temporary/Part-Time, Non-Exempt
 

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. The National Museum is located near Union Station in the historic Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.

Museum Store Associates are responsible for promoting sales, processing sales and orders, and providing customer service. Position is scheduled for between 15 – 22.5 hours per week. Preferred schedule is one to two days a week and one weekend, preferably Saturday. The weekend is required but the weekdays scheduling is flexible with advanced notice. Position is seasonal for the holiday catalog season with an expected start date August 2022 and an end date of January 31, 2023. Store staff is required to be available for Black Friday weekend and JANM’s Oshogatsu Family Festival.

Duties include processing on-site, phone, mail and web order sales. Provide customer service and relay special customer and vendor issues to the Store Manager or Retail Director as appropriate. Assure that store merchandise is attractively displayed and well stocked. Assure that the store appearance is neat and orderly. This includes maintaining supplies, dusting and sweeping, and alerting Manager or Director when supplies are needed. Reconcile cash drawer at the end of the day. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, staff will be required to adhere to all public health guidelines and protocols. Utilization of clear barrier/partition at cash register and face masks are required. Assist with In Store Pick-up, by appointment and processing sales Friday thru Sundays. Duties may be modified as needed to ensure compliance with local government health orders.

Minimum 6 months customer service experience in a retail environment. Previous experience working at a non-profit organization in collaboration with volunteers preferred. Ability to multi-task, adept with handling cash and processing sales and requires professional phone skills. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co-workers, volunteers and the public. Knowledge of POS system is preferred and Altru database, Gmail, and Shopify beneficial. Computer literate, Internet savvy, and experience with MS Word, Excel, and Power Point preferred, Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus; however, sensitivity to issues of diversity and ethnicity is essential.
