Discover Nikkei Software Engineer
Full-Time/ Non-Exempt

An Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. The National Museum is located in the Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.

The Discover Nikkei Software Engineer will lead technical elements in redesigning and expanding features, functionality, usability, and user engagement of JANM’s DiscoverNikkei.org site. Site is built using Django framework on AWS. Responsible for project managing implementation and launch of the expanded site, including working with team members and web design consultants on updated site design which will include responsive design layouts, writing new code needed for the expansion, coordinating technical efforts of a small team of staff and volunteers, leading alpha and beta testing efforts, and launch.
Computer Science degree preferred with Minimum 3 years of experience developing dynamic web applications. Requires solid grasp of Linux, Python, SQL, PostgreSQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Experience with AWS. Knowledge of basic graphic design, page layout, and image optimization. Understanding of website architecture, usability issues, and browser peculiarities. Experience using Django or other web frameworks and customizing open-source CMS software. Experience using third-party APIs such as Facebook and Disqus. Experience with web analytics such as Google Analytics and AddThis. Experience using GitHub or other version control system. MS Office, Gmail, Slack and Asana preferred. Position is funded through January 2024. Criminal background and credit check is required. Requires full vaccination +booster for COVID-19 to work on-site.
