POSITION DESCRIPTION

Venice Arts seeks a part-time Teaching & Media Assistant for our Film + Digital Media Career Pathways Pilot Program (FDM), serving low-income young people ages 18-24. FDM offers education and training in video production and editing, designed to support participants’ career readiness. Working under the Director of Education, and responsive to the Lead Teaching Artist, responsibilities include:

TEACHING ASSISTANCE

● Act as a Teaching Assistant for the FDM program, including: (a) 160-hour Digital Video + Editing training (2 sessions offered—Spring, Summer), and (b) 480-hour Digital Video Pre-Apprenticeship program (starts fall).

● Provide as-needed teaching assistance in Venice Arts’ other educational programs of Venice Arts, as needs arise and time permits.

CLASSROOMS + EQUIPMENT

● Set up the FDM classroom to support weekly in-class activities.

● Take attendance and assure that the Program Assistant receives notification of absences within 15 minutes of the start of class.

● Provide in-class teaching and mentoring support to students.

● Hand out equipment for in-class shoots and receive/log their return.

● Maintain all equipment—both for the FDM and Venice Arts’ other programs.

● Maintain media labs including wiping computer drives and installing new or updated software at the end of each program cycle.

● Check-out and receive-back loaner equipment according to Venice Arts’ protocols.

● Provide tech support to students, primarily in video editing, as needed.

VISUAL ARCHIVE AND FILE MANAGEMENT

● Support the training of faculty and students on Venice Arts’ file management protocols, periodically checking to assure that they are being followed.

● Following strict archive naming and tagging protocols, update the media archive for all programs at the end of each teaching cycle, with selects made by the Executive Director, or designate.

● Photo and video document programs at key points in the workshop cycle, when special activities are being held, and as directed.

● Provide images for the website, or other communications, as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate is personable, an excellent communicator, and able to self-initiate and work independently, as well as collaboratively. A graduate of a filmmaking program or an individual demonstrating related experience, required. Experience with photography, a plus. Must possess a high level of technical expertise with digital video cameras, sound, and related equipment, Apple computers, and Adobe Suite software, with proficient or greater skills using PremierePro.

At least one year of experience teaching or assistant teaching filmmaking to young people is required; experience building your own syllabus or lesson plans a plus, as is an understanding of the educational equity needs of low-income and other highly marginalized young people, a plus.

SCHEDULE + COMPENSATION

This is a non-exempt (hourly) position with a variable work schedule that will be no less than 20 hours per week and 30-40 hours per week during some teaching cycles. Depending on skill and experience, there may be an opportunity for consistent, full-time work. While the work week will be established upon hire, it will primarily be weekdays, with some Saturdays required.

The position pays $18-$20 an hour, commensurate with experience.
