Position Summary

The Director of Production Contracts & Legal Affairs will serve as the primary relationship manager for all agreements, licenses, and agreements for actors, directors, writers, music licenses, and other production and co-production agreements and commissions.

Reporting to (and working closely with) the Executive Director, the Director of Production Contracts & Legal Affairs will also work closely with the Artistic Team, as well as Production, and the Chief Financial Officer, to make sure all agreements, and the conversations, are streamlined, executed, and aligned.

Responsibilities

The ultimate aim of the Director of Production Contracts & Legal Affairs is to achieve the outcomes listed above. In order to achieve those outcomes, we imagine that the Director of Production Contracts & Legal Affairs will spend their time in the following ways:

  • Support the execution of all agreements and licenses outlined above that would require the signature of the Executive Director.
  • Maintain and keep accurate records of all agreements and/or licenses either digitally on the server, in print or both.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with any and all agencies, law firms, etc. that the Geffen Playhouse may deal with in order to facilitate the execution of any agreements.
  • Keep a calendar, or some other organized method, in order to facilitate the timely execution of all agreements/licenses.
  • Assist in the negotiation of terms with the various unions for all season productions as well as any Spotlight Events or other outside events.
  • Assist and take on a more producorial role in the production of any filmed projects under the GP Films umbrella, including managing any and all filming contracts with artists and/or unions
  • Work closely with Geffen Playhouse legal counsel as needed.
  • Work with the CFO, Producer, and Production Manager to assist in the creation and reconciliation of production budgets.
  • Work with the Director of Operations to assist with any health and safety protocols, measures or needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years relevant management experience in theatre or arts
  • Successful track record in theatre production, general and/or project management
  • Extensive knowledge of Health and Safety and its practical application in theatre
  • Knowledge of artist/creative contractual agreements and practical knowledge of union agreements (AEA, USA, SDC, SAG/AFTRA, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office required
  • Sound understanding of company and project finance
  • A motivated self-starter who enjoys working with managers and artists with diplomacy, discretion, professionalism, pragmatism and a can-do approach
  • Ability to prioritize a complex workload with excellent organizational skills.
  • To be a team player with the ability to work independently
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances
  • Ability to engage confidently and pleasantly with a wide range of people
  • Highly organized with excellent administrative skills
  • Able to take responsibility and make quick, informed, operational decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree (preferably in business or Theater management)
  • Progressive, positive and forward-thinking attitude
  • Ability to be flexible with working hours to include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays depending on current work-load and theater schedule

Compensation:
