The California Arts Council announces funding for its 2012-13 Artists in Schools Program. Artists in Schools supports professional teaching artists in classroom and after-school settings. The 2013-14 Artists in Schools Program will provide funding for 118 arts organizations to help bring instruction in music, theater, dance, visual arts, and other art forms to children statewide during the school year. The total amount awarded through the 2013-14 Artists in Schools program is $944,784.
“Arts education leads to increased creativity, higher graduation rates, and greater aspirations,” said Craig Watson, Director of the California Arts Council. “Through Artists in Schools, the California Arts Council strives to improve K-12 education for thousands of our state’s children – many who might not have access to arts education without the high-quality teaching artist residencies of the Artists in Schools program.”
The organizations receive funding in two areas: teaching-artists’ residency activity, and planning grants. One hundred and fourteen organizations will receive funding to bring professional teaching artists to in-school and after-school programs. These arts education experiences will provide a creative space and learning where K-12 students are able to find their own creativity and work together as innovative thinkers. The list of funded organizations and a description of their teaching artists’ work is below.
Four organizations will receive small Artists in Schools Planning grants, which are designed to assist the arts organization and school partner to plan a course of action for the future and develop strategies to integrate arts into the classroom. Planning grant recipients include Top Hat Dancers (Los Angeles County), Mariposa Arts Council, Trinity Arts Council, and Colusa County Arts Council.
Funding for this program comes in part from the sale of the Arts Plate, the iconic license plate with a sunset and palm tree motif designed by California artist Wayne Thiebaud. If one million drivers put Arts Plates on their vehicles, California would have $40 million for the arts and arts education annually. More information is available at http://www.artsplate.org/.

Arts and Learning Corporation Orange County | The Arts and Learning Corporation will work with students for 20 weeks at all levels of production, including acting, directing, costuming, and backstage to produce the wondrous story of The Wizard of Oz. $5,537 |

Boxtales Theatre Company Santa Barbara County | The Boxtales Theater Company will provide a 12-week residency to 4th graders at two elementary schools. California Dance Institute Los Angeles County | California Dance Institute will help sponsor one of eight participating schools for a year of weekly dance instruction. California Symphony Orchestra, Inc. Contra Costa County | The California Symphony Orchestra will fund the second year of Sound Minds, an instrumental music program offered to 1st and 2nd grade students at Downer Elementary in San Pablo. Cantare Con Vivo Alameda County | Cantare Con Vivo, by way of its program Cantare Children’s Choirs of Oakland, will partner with four Oakland schools to conduct 12- to 28-week residencies. Center for World Music San Diego County | The project will permit four highly skilled native (or native-trained) artist-teachers to conduct year-round in-depth residencies of traditional music and dance from South Africa, Iran, Indonesia, and Mexico. In four selected K-8 San Diego public schools, weekly classes will be offered to both advanced students (i.e., those currently participating in these classes) as well as beginning students (i.e., those starting fresh in the Academic Year 2013-14). Stanislaus County | The Central California Art League will work with students from the Fremont Open Plan Elementary School in Modesto to acquire an overall understanding of the elements of visual art and their applications. Chinese Cultural Productions San Francisco County | Chinese Cultural Productions will support after-school arts education programs at three San Francisco elementary schools. Instructors will provide nine hours of weekly classes in traditional Chinese dance to approximately 70 students for 30 weeks. City Ballet, Inc. San Diego County | City Ballet will offer a 28-week dance artist-in-residence program for all second grade students (approximately 180) at Porter Elementary, a Title I school in one of San Diego’s most underserved neighborhoods. City of San Fernando Los Angeles County | The City of San Fernando’s Mariachi Master Apprentice Program (MMAP) connects master musicians with underserved youth in an instructional experience that preserves mariachi music traditions through a quality apprenticeship program incorporating artistic and historical accuracy. Community Works West Alameda County | Community Work West will integrate standards-based visual arts instruction into a Restorative Justice class at MetWest High School in Oakland. Composing Together Alameda County | Composing Together will present 12-week sessions and two concerts to two Oakland Middle Schools. The professional artists will work with students to develop a comfort level and understanding of the creative process and how it relates to their lives. $2,240 |
Coronado School of the Arts San Diego County | Coronado School of the Arts, a 4-year, public, arts conservatory at Coronado High School, will contract with 2 artists for a 20-week residency that will engage students in a music, dance and video project. Randy Phillips, a professional musician and songwriter, will guide teams of music students to compose, arrange, and record original songs. Tony Perri, a professional film and video maker, will work with teams of students to produce a video using the original compositions and acoustic arrangements. Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County Santa Cruz County | Cultural Council of Santa Cruz will work with students at Amesti Elementary, a school with 80% English Language Learners to increase students’ language and academic competency, and gain confidence through FRESH PAINT. Forestville Education Foundation Sonoma County | The Forestville Education Foundation will provide hands-on visual art experiences for 160 K-3 students. Ginga Arts Inc. Los Angeles County | Ginga Arts will continue its support for the continuation of a 10-month Capoeira residency program with Brazilian Capoeira master, Mestre Batata, at the Accelerated Charter Elementary School (ACES) located in South Los Angeles. L.A.C.E.R. Luna Kids Dance, Inc. Alameda County | Luna Kids Dance will work with two schools to implement comprehensive scope and sequence K-8 standards-based dance education programs. Dance is brought to each school through a professional development model which includes model dance classes, side-by-side coaching, in-services, and family dance events. $9,840 |
Lux Art Institute San Diego County | Lux Art Institute will support an 18-week visual art program to students in grades 1, 3, 4, and 6 at Ocean Knoll Elementary School. Malashock Dance San Diego County | Malashock Dance will expand its highly successful Academics in Motion program by launching the Math in Motion program in three schools serving K-6 students. The residency will engage students and classroom teachers in the process of integrating dance with common core math curriculum, which improves the likelihood of success for a larger percentage of students. $8,760 |
Mammoth Art Guild, Inc. Mono County | Mammoth Art Guild, Inc. (dba Mono County Arts Council) will continue working with four schools to allow more time for hands-on learning of the art techniques. Marin Shakespeare Company Marin County | Marin Shakespeare Company will use the funds from the California Arts Council to provide sequential, standards-based performing arts instruction for students grades K-5 at Lynwood Elementary School in Novato and Laurel Dell and Short School in San Rafael. All three schools serve large numbers of low-income families and English language learners. According to the 2012 APR Report, Laurel Dell and Short School has a population of 84% of economically disadvantaged students, and Lynwood 61%. $8,760 |
Marin Theatre Company Marin County | Marin Theatre Company will provide students an in-depth experience in the arts with instruction from professional theatre artists using VAPA Theater Content Standards. Curriculum is structured to fit the needs of each school. Muckenthaler Cultural Center Orange County | Muckenthaler Cultural Center will continue and expand its successful programs with Project Hope School, a school for homeless children and Imperial Middle School, a Title I School. Music by the Mountain, Inc. Siskiyou County
Music Center/Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County | Music by the Mountain will work with 4th through 8th grade students in two schools to present Go West. This performance will deepen the students’ skills and knowledge as the company continues their residency from last year. $3,520 In October 2013, The Music Center will enter the third year of a partnership with the Julian Nava Learning Academy (LA Unified School District 5, South Los Angeles), helping teachers gain capacity to integrate dance instruction into sequential, standards-based classroom learning. Oakland Youth Chorus Alameda County | Oakland Youth Chorus will support after-school choral music education classes that complement the school-day curriculum. Out of Site/The Tides Center San Francisco County | Out of Site will continue to support free after school classes in architecture/public art for underserved San Francisco public high school students. Continuing the successful work that CAC has previously funded, this class will provide 30 youth (80% of which are low income/working class) with a point of entry into a discipline rarely integrated into public school curriculum and vastly under-represented by people of color. $9,840 |
P.S. ARTS Los Angeles County | P.S. ARTS’ Teaching Artist will provide over 200 middle school students at the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) Harvard campus with free, comprehensive, standards-based theater education. Palo Alto Art Center Foundation Santa Clara County | Palo Alto Art Center Foundation will support six artists in the 2013-14 program cycle to work with the Cultural Kaleidoscope Program. Pasadena Conservatory of Music Los Angeles County | Pasadena Conservatory of Music will present its Young Musicians (YM) at Jefferson elementary school. Peralta Parent Teacher Group Alameda County | Peralta Parent Teacher Group will have artists Trena Noval and Ellen Oppenheimer help Peralta students explore local and regional history, environment and cultures of California through the lens of contemporary and historical art and artists. Performing Arts Workshop San Francisco County | Performing Arts Workshop will conduct a total of 17 in-school dance/creative movement residencies (series of classes) at two Title I K-5 partner schools in San Francisco.
