SACRAMENTO, CA – Today the California Arts Council officially announced its final grant awards for 2022, adding another $2.8 million in funding for the year for 48 grants supporting artists, culture bearers, and cultural workers throughout the state of California.
The final round of funding for the 2022 grant season included three opportunities in support of arts education and creative youth development, grantee technical assistance, and funding to identify a partner administering organization to regrant funds for individual artists fellowships in the Northern California region.
Altogether, the projected sum of grants awarded for 2022’s funding cycle is more than $145 million—by far the biggest annual investment in California Arts Council history, largely supported by the $40 million one-time boost in support for the agency’s creative youth and arts education development programs, and $60 million to implement the California Creative Corps pilot program, aimed at increasing the ways in which artists are engaged in public work.
Council members voted for a third round of funding to reopen the Cultural Pathways – Technical Assistance and Administering Organization – Individual Artists Fellowship grant programs during their August and October business meetings last year, due to a lack of eligible applications in the initial rounds. The agency’s Creative Youth Development program was also reopened to ensure that remaining funds from the 2021-22 budget were encumbered before the end of the fiscal year.
The California Arts Council’s grant programs are administered through a multistep, public process. Following an open call for applications, submissions are adjudicated by peer review panels from the arts and cultural fields and representative of California’s diversity. Based on panel recommendations and availability of funds, the Council voted on grant awards for the final round of funding at their public meeting in March of 2023.
Similarly, at the Council’s February 2023 business meeting, members voted to approve the administering organization for the Arts Administrators Pipeline Fellowship program, supporting the implementation of a fellow-driven grant program dedicated to equity and community engagement, pairing emerging arts administrators with arts and culture organizations for a 12-month paid fellowship.
“Even as we spread the word for our 2023 program offerings, we are thrilled to shine a light and celebrate California’s arts workforce with one last funding announcement for 2022,” said California Arts Council Director Jonathan Moscone. “We are deeply grateful for Governor Newsom and the Legislature’s overwhelming investment in our agency’s work to ensure an equitably supported arts sector.”
Interested members of the public, artists, arts organizations, and community leaders are encouraged to visit the California Arts Council website to learn about future grant opportunities as details become available. Notification of grant program guidelines, applications, and technical assistance opportunities will be also published in the California Arts Council’s weekly e-newsletter, ArtBeat.
