PROGRAMMING OVERVIEW
For over a century, SMP has been dedicated to promoting the arts. Today, the Playhouse showcases and provides arts experiences in a spectrum of genres, including theater, music, dance, film, comedy, and family-oriented programming. The works we produce on stage are timely and set in cultural and historical context with the aim to engage, educate, and entertain the community. Each season, we attract 15,000+ patrons to our performances who are seeking shared experiences as much as an evening of deep, academic inquiry. Many of the works we produce (~60 annually) resonate with our community—either through the artists engaged, themes explored, cultures reflected, or all of the above.
Our engagement strategies foster enthusiastic arts audiences, act as a pipeline to intimate collective experiences, and play a critical role in introducing community members of all ages to the performing arts. Whether seeing a play for the first time through our Theater for Young Audiences program, discovering the magic of the art of puppet making with family through our Family Series, or aspiring to find a place on our stage through AKT Academy, our educational offerings provide community members with substantial touch points to the arts.
