With support from the California Arts Council, San Francisco Opera Association will renew Performing Arts Connection, a week-long program that occurs during students’ spring break. This exceptional, in-depth artistic experience offers Bay Area middle school students of all backgrounds and abilities an opportunity to explore music, theater, dance, and visual arts with local artists and highly trained educators, in a supportive and dynamic environment.
San Francisco Opera (SFO), offstage and on, defines artistic excellence. Founded in 1923 by Gaetano Merola, SFO is internationally recognized as one of the top opera companies in the world, and is heralded for presenting productions of the highest artistic quality with a roster of acclaimed artists. Under the leadership of General Director Matthew Shilvock (only the seventh General Director in SFO’s history), SFO core programmatic areas include mainstage productions; free community events such as Opera in the Park (Golden Gate Park); a renowned young professional training program – the Adler Fellowship program; and a Diversity, Equity and Community (DEC) department offering robust free programming for the Bay Area community and beyond. In 2019, SFO created the first dedicated DEC Department in an American opera company, formalizing an institutional commitment to equity and inclusion both within the organization and externally.
